What Do you Need to Know about Hematuria?

Hematuria is used to describe the health condition in which blood is seen in the urine. When the urine is red or pink this could be connected to blood in the urine and is termed “gross” or “visible” hematuria. Sometimes, blood is in the urine but is not easily noticed and it is called “microscopic” hematuria since it can only be viewed under a microscope. If you are suffering from a gross hematuria, you may also observe blood clots in your urine, which can be uncomfortable. During routine visits to your health care provider, you are often requested to provide a urine sample for testing. Many tests are done on a regular basis, such as- checking for sugar (diabetes), bacteria (infection), and blood. Blood might be observed either using a chemical strip (called a dipstick) or under a microscope. If blood is observed in these ways, then you may have “microscopic hematuria." There are many reasons for blood in the urine. Most of them are not serious, but some may demand care from your health care provider.
